"In association with Ancestry.com Family"

First speak with living relatives if possible for any and all information they may have. Write to the County Seat of the town or city of the persons birth/death for birth/death certificates. There is a small charge so find out what this is before hand and send a self-addressed stamped envelope along with your request. These documents will be found in the County Seat of the town or city nearest the persons birth or death in the hall of records.

Some of the older certificates contain much more information than they do today, such as family listing (brothers/sisters)! Many times if the person was known to be Indian, the tribe will be named on the certificate! Start with who you know and work back! You may just discover names of relations that you never knew about! As the certificates arrive be ready to send for the next one going back through your family line and hopefully these certificates will help in creating your family tree! This may not work for all, but it is worth a try! Good Luck!!!

P.S. The steps above should work for anyone attempting to trace their ancestry!!

Contact the Cherokee Nation, Oklahoma's Registration Department(contact information listed below). The CNO will send a packet of information to those wishing to register as a tribal member. The packet contains, in full detail, all the information needed concerning what the requirements are for becoming an enrollled tribal member and more. This packet is very helpful for folks just starting to trace their ancestry, and is a must for those who have already traced their ancestry to a relative listed on the Dawes Guion/Miller Rolls (1898-1914).
