the People's Voice
Sunday, September 26, 1999

The Second Annual Native American Music Awards is scheduled for the Popejoy Hall (2000 seat capacity) in Albuquerque, New Mexico on November 6, 1999. Tickets went on sale August 20th through PROTIX (1-800-905-3315). Special VIP tickets, which include invitations to our post show party, can only be purchased through our ticket office. The Mayor of Albuquerque has proclaimed November 6th as "Native American Music Awards Day".

Nominees for the Second Annual Native Music Awards have released national recordings in the 1998 calendar year. Final nominees were selected by the NAMA Advisory Board (50 members consisting of leading professionals responsible for marketing, reviewing, promoting and distributing Native American music recordings in Indian Country and the music industry). Nominee submissions were made by the artists' record label, production company, or distributor.

Winners in 16 categories will be determined by a general public vote. Winners for the remaining categories will be determined by the NAMA Advisory Board.

This year's Awards show promises to be even bigger and features some special surprises including our Thorpe Sports Award presented by the late Olympic Champion, Jim Thorpe's granddaughter and our "Did You Know They Are Native" segment will also include professional athletes.

Performances by our leading nominees include the blues band, Indigenous, who the great BB King has just embraced to feature as his opening act this Fall, Bill Miller who has opened for Tori Amos, and Primeau & Mike who worked with Robbie Robertson on the Turner documentary series "The Native Americans". Others who have expressed interest in participating as presenters include: Rita Coolidge, Wes Studi, Chuck Norris, John Tesh, Hal Ketchum, Bruce Cockburn, Richie Havens and many more. We guarantee the Second Annual Native American Music Awards will be an equally enjoyable experience, as much as an extremely memorable one.
