WHITECLAY, NE - It was reported today, at 3:30 p.m. EST, by Marvin Young Dog, AIM Director of Veteran Affairs that the town of Whiteclay, Nebraska was being occupied by the American Indian Movement and the Oglala Indian Nation. According to KILI Radio, however, AIM and several people from the Oglala Nation are "not occupying the whole town of Whiteclay" but have set up a protest camp.AIM members Clyde Bellecourt and Floyd Hand, had vowed to set up tipis to protest the continued beer sales. The tipis were to be set up near the place where Black Elk and Hard Heart's bodies were found. The bodies were found between Pine Ridge village and Whiteclay, in ditch west of Highway 87.
The Oglala Nation also claims that the land now known as Whiteclay is legally a part of the Pine Ridge Reservation. The treaty of 1868 and the 1889 Dawes Allotment are being cited as legal proof, as to who the legal custodians of the land are.
The Oglala Sioux Tribal Council is attending a meeting at Russel Mean's home tonight to discuss strategies concerning Whiteclay, as well as, Clinton's upcoming visit.
President Clinton is scheduled to visit the Pine Ridge Reservation tomorrow.
