The Native American Indian students of the University of North Dakota (UND) are asking for support in dealing with the "Fighting Sioux Mascot" issue. Currently they have succeeded in a recent UND student government resolution urging the University to change the name.

The President of the UND student government, however, vetoed the resolution and now the issue is at a standstill until February 21, 1999.

This issue again will be at the forefront during a Student government meeting and the Native American students are saying this issue will not go away as long as there are Native American students attending UND in Grand Forks.

The issue is hot and heavy. This week, on Thursday, February 17, 1999 the North Dakota State legislature will debate in the House whether the UND should change the name.

The students involved with the issue gave testimony at a recent hearing but were not heard by the committee members of the House Government and Veterans Affairs committee.

There are two major hearings and several meetings coming up. The concerned students are asking people to write to the School's paper with their opinion's concerning this issue. The email address is dstudent@sage.und.nodak.edu.
