Statment: Attorney General Richard Blumenthal

"This decision is outrageously wrong. The BIA got it right the first time in its preliminary decision. What changed their minds is unfathomable and unforgivable. We will file an immediate appeal and pursue it vigorously – within the Department of Interior and in the courts if necessary. This inexplicable reversal illustrates dramatically the need for sweeping reform of the BIA recognition process.""The two key defects in this group's petition remain: it has failed to show a continuously existing community with real ties across family lines, and sustained internal political leadership and authority over members. The BIA has made a mockery of its own rules by granting recognition to a group that has failed to meet two critical criteria for showing sufficient tribal ties over time."
