In August of 2002, disabled Native American Veterans and supports completed the first annual Walk/Run of Honor from the Leech Lake Veterans Memorial Pow-Wow Grounds in Gamiskwawakakag to St. Paul. That sacred walk with the warriors was to bring awareness to the cost of freedom and to raise funds for the Disabled for Life Memorial in Washington, DC. It was completed in one week minus one hour. The second annual Walk/Run of Honor will be a Walk/Run of Justice for Peace and Justice. And it will be a walk/run against the ignorance that fuels racism. Walkers/Runners will take the same route to the State Capitol and will be delivering petitions to Governor Pawlenty and the Minnesota Dept. of Education. The walk will begin on Friday, August 15th at the Leech Lake Pow-Wow Grounds.Cover Sheet: North Central Minnesota Native American Veterans Outreach & Resource Center Every First Grader in Minnesota should know what a treaty is. Every Second Grader in Minnesota should know where the ceded territory is in their own backyard.
Because racism, discrimination and prejudice against the aboriginal people residing in this region of these United States of America is fueled by ignorance and misunderstanding of treaty law and historical events leading to federal Indian policies, past and present, especially in those areas of the state surrounding Indian Reservations, we believe that all students in the state of Minnesota (American Indian and non-Indian) should be taught the true history of this territory. Indian Treaties and Federal Indian Policy need be taught in Minnesota Schools grades K through 12. Particularly those treaties pertaining to the Ojibwe and Dakota tribes with reservations within the boundaries of the state of Minnesota and those tribes bordering the state of Minnesota.
