MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - The Eighth Annual Indian Wellness Fair will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 from 12-4 p.m., at the Minneapolis American Indian Center, 1530 E. Franklin Ave. The fair is free and open to the public.

More than 50 local health agencies and community groups and HMO’s will offer fairgoers free health screenings and information. The Indian Health Board (IHB), Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) and Metropolitan Health Plan (MHP) will participate. HCMC’s Diabetes Center, Eye clinic, and nutrition services will provide education and information. MHP will provide information and resources regarding smokeless tobacco. IHB will offer body mass index testing, blood pressure screening and information on breast and cervical cancer.

The National Kidney Foundation of Minnesota (KEEP) program will provide free health screenings for kidney disease. The fair will also include cholesterol screening with blood glucose screening provided by the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation. The Ma’iingun Family Education Center will provide information on family programming and blood pressure screening.

Buffalo burgers, nutritious snacks, wild rice, and beverages will be served free to fairgoers. Each half- hour there will be drawings for free door prizes. To qualify for the grand prize drawing you must have participated in three health screenings.

There will be information for people of all ages. Come and join us for an afternoon of learning, fun and freebies. Be sure to stay for the feast. Most displays include informational materials and free samples. There will be something of interest to everyone.
