Often touted as the first Native American woman to professionally record the Native flute, Youngblood is now the first woman to win the Grammy in the Native American category. She has previously earned numerous other prominent awards from organizations such as the Native American Music Awards (NAMMIES) and the Association for Independent Music (INDIE award).
Each piece on "Beneath the Raven Moon" features a different flute from Youngblood's amazing collection, each one in a different key and hand crafted from various types of wood. The album showcases her exemplary flute playing in a variety of styles from traditional to classical to contemporary blues arrangements. She even accompanies herself with soulful vocal harmonizing on two tracks.
This is Ms. Youngblood's first time to win the music industry's highest honor. "This has been an incredible journey and I am honored to be in such good company" she says. The prestigious awards were presented in New York City on February 23rd during a star filled live network television broadcast.
