OTTAWA, CANADA - Chief Commissioner, Phil Fontaine, today welcomed the appointment of Jane Dickson-Gilmore as Commissioner. Ms. Dickson-Gilmore's appointment was announced last week by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. She joins the Chief Commissioner and Commissioners Roger Augustine, Daniel J. Bellegarde, Renée Dupuis, Alan Holman and Sheila Purdy on the Commission.

With her knowledge of human rights and aboriginal issues, Ms. Dickson-Gilmore is a welcome addition to our team, said Chief Commissioner Fontaine. My fellow Commissioners and I look forward to working with her.

Ms. Dickson-Gilmore is an Associate Professor in the Law Department of Carleton University, where she teaches such subjects as Aboriginal Community and Restorative Justice and Conflict Resolution.

Active in First Nations communities, she serves as project leader of the Oujé-Bougoumou Cree First Nation Community Justice Project and makes presentations to schools on aboriginal culture, history and politics. Ms. Dickson-Gilmore graduated from the London School of Economics with a Ph.D. in law and holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Criminology from Simon Fraser University.
