To celebrate Native American month in November, IUPUI, IU Bloomington (IUB), the Eiteljorg Museum (EM), American Indian Center of Indiana (AICI), and Indiana American Indian Theatre Company (IAITC) have lined up a number of activities and events that will take place in Indianapolis and Bloomington. Some information is tentative. Here are some of the events scheduled:

IUB: Fri. 11/1 – Tribal Sovereignty Presentations Tribal leaders and prominent Native leaders will be discussing tribal sovereignty. Speakers: Clyde Hall (Lemhi Shoshone), Tex Hall (Hidatsa/Mandan/Arikara) NCAI President, Brian Buchanan (Miami) Chief of Miami Nation of Indiana, Steve Russell (Cherokee) IU Bloomington Location: IU Memorial Union, Bloomington Time: TBA

IAITC: Fri. 11/1 & Sat. 11/2 – Half Breeds and Pedigree Play A theatrical performance on the lives of contemporary Native Americans. Contact Becky Martin or Alberta Printup at 580-0882 for details. Location: Redeemer Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis Time: 7:00 to 8:00 pm

EM: Fri. 11/1 & Sat. 11/2 – Eiteljorg Holiday Preview Shop early for Christmas in the White River Trader, museum store. Location: Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis Time: TBA

EM: Sat. 11/2 – Breaking Silence About Native American Sovereignty Symposium Part of the Spirit & Place Festival, participants will share historic and contemporary information about Native American sovereignty—what it meant historically for indigenous peoples and how it is affecting them today. Speakers: Clyde Hall (Lemhi Shoshone), Tex Hall (Hidatsa/Mandan/Arikara) NCAI President, Brian Buchanan (Miami) Chief of Miami Nation of Indiana, Steve Russell (Cherokee) IU Bloomington Location: Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis Time: TBA

AICI: Sat. 11/2 – Urban Indian Panel Discussion Prominent speakers will be on hand to discuss the plight of Urban Indians and the challenges they face. Speakers: TBA Location: IUPUI campus Time: TBA

IUB: Mon. 11/4 to Fri. 11/8 – First Nations Film Festival A number of Native American films will be features throughout the week. Some films include "The Return of Navajo Boy", "Natural Native", "Smoke Signals", and more. Location: IU Bloomington Time: morning and afternoon showings

EM: Thurs. 11/7 to Sat. 11/9 – Harvest Celebration Dinner Series Two Native American guests will share information about traditional Native American harvest observances each day in the Mihtohseenionki exhibition an each evening during the Harvest Celebration Dinners. Speakers: TBA Location: Eiteljorg Museum Time: 7:00 to 9:00 pm

IUPUI: Fri. 11/8 – Indians 101 Educational class/presentation describing the purpose of pow wows, traditional dances, and drum. Etiquette of observers will also be addressed. Speaker: Dr. Wesley Thomas (Dine’), IU Bloomington Location: IUPUI Time: 2:00 to 3:30 pm

IUPUI: Sat. 11/9 – IUPUI Pow Wow Non-competitive pow wow/dance presentation. Arts and craft vendors will be invited to sell authentic craft. Location: IUPUI Time: Event will take place from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm with grand entry at 1:00pm and 7:00 pm.

IUPUI: Mon. 11/11 – Poetry Reading Reading by Native poet. Speaker: LeAnne Howe (Choctaw)--fiction writer, poet, and college instructor, and her most recent book, Shell Shaker, received the American Book Award for 2002 from the Before Columbus Foundation. Location: IUPUI Time: 11:00 am to 12:30 pm

IUB: Mon. 11/11 – Poetry Reading Reading by Native poet, LeAnne Howe. Location: IU Bloomington Time: TBA afternoon/early evening

IUPUI: Thurs. 11/14 – Film Presentation and Discussion Watch the movie, Windtalkers, and participate in discussion. Speaker: Dr. Wesley Thomas (Dine’), IU Bloomington Location: IUPUI Time: 12:00 to 2:00 pm with discussion from 2:30 to 3:30 pm

AICI: HOPE Workshop Helping Our People Excel workshops are designed to promote professional development and self sufficiency among Indiana’s Native people.

Speakers: TBA Location: IUPUI Time: 9:00 am to 1:00 pm

American Indian Center of Chicago Pow Wow

The 49th Annual Pow Wow will take place on November 15th through 17th at the Northeastern Illinois University campus in Chicago. Over 40 Native American arts and crafts vendors will be featured along with American Indian food, raffle, and prizes.
