The American Indian Movement Support Group of Ohio and Northern Kentucky has received many inquiries about whether or not certain area groups are "state-recognized tribes."We have verified that there are no state (or federally) recognized tribes in the states of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and West Virginia. (See letters). This means that groups such as the "Appalachian American Indians of West Virginia, Inc", the "Native American Indian Federation", the "United Remnant Band of the Shawnee Nation," the "Upper Kiskopo Sept Shawnee of Kokomo Indiana", and others are making fraudulent claims to be state-recognized.
Resolutions do not confer upon any group or organization the legal status of a Native American tribe. There is an important legal distinction between an organization and a tribe.
We strongly encourage all groups and all persons to be truthful and honest about who and what they are. It is also important for all persons to verify the claims of any group before becoming involved with it.
Verification of this information can be obtained by contacting Ken Van Wey with the U.S. Department of the Interior at the contact information below. Questions and requests for clarification should be directed to Ken Van Wey. Go to Ken-Van-Wey.htm to see all documents.
