Ms.Schmaltz's Rosebud Elementary School third grade class, of the Todd County School District is doing an Internet social studies project. The school is located on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. On November 14, 2001 the class sent out a letter that briefly explains the project, as well as, a little bit about the class and the community.

The class is asking for folks from all around the world to help them with their project by simply writing to them. As next best thing to visiting without leaving their own community, the project will help the students learn about other places, from those who actually live in the communities.

Following is the letter the class sent out:

3rd Grade Social Studies Project

Hau, Kola This is Lakota for "How do you do, friend?"

We are in Ms.Schmaltz and Sioux's third grade class at Rosebud Elementary in Rosebud, South Dakota.

We are trying to visit as many places as we can this school year. We are asking for your help by telling us about the area in which you live and e-mailing us back. We are mapping the places we've been to on a big map, and would enjoy hearing about the places where you all live.

To tell you a little about us, Rosebud is located in the south-central part of South Dakota and located on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation. It is mostly gently rolling hills with patches of pine trees dotting the landscape. One can see cattle, and occasionally buffalo, grazing in open fields.

Rosebud is a small community of about 800 people. Most people here work for tribal administration, hospital, or the educational system.

Our school has a k-5 grade level and has about 315 students. We have 18 regular classrooms. You can further check out the Todd County School District by visiting: http://www.tcsdk12.org.

We ask that you do these two things:

1) E-mail us and tell us your location so we can plot it on our US or World map. Briefly tell us about yourselves!

2) Forward this letter to as many people as possible, even if they live in the same town as you.

With your help we are really curious to see where our travels will take us via the Internet this school year.

Pilamaya!! (Lakota for THANK YOU)

Our e-mail address is: usakids@tcsdk12.org

Your friends, Ms.Schmaltz and Sioux's 3rd Grade Class
