WASHINGTON D.C. - The Radio and Television News Directors Foundation is seeking applicants for its Summer 2002 Excellence in Journalism Education fellowships. RTNDF will place 25 university-level broadcast educators in radio and television newsrooms for four weeks during the summer to refresh their skills, master new technologies and develop contacts and partnerships with news managers to improve classroom curricula.

The application deadline is December 14, 2001.

"This program addresses the obvious problem of an educator's distance from broadcast journalism," says James Hoyt, a professor from the University of Wisconsin who spent last summer working at WISC-TV in Madison, WI.

"Getting back into the day-to-day life of the broadcast newsroom was a great way for me to reconnect."

The fellowship includes a three-day orientation session in May in Washington, and a trip in September to the RTNDA International Conference & Exhibition in Long Beach, CA. RTNDF pays a $2,400 stipend and covers travel, housing and meal expenses for the orientation, the four-week fellowship, and the convention.

The fellowships are open to broadcast journalism educators with five or more years of college-level teaching experience. Participants will serve their four-week fellowship between May 20 and August 31, 2002, with actual dates determined by educators and their host stations.

For further information on the fellowships and a brochure and application form, please visit RTNDF or contact Margaret Ershler, project manager, phone: 202-659-6510 or e-mail: margarete@rtndf.org.

RTNDF promotes excellence in electronic journalism through research, education and training for news professionals and journalism students. The Foundation's work is supported by contributions from foundations, corporations, members of the Radio-Television News Directors Association, and other individuals.

The Excellence in Journalism Education project is funded by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
