SUNY College at Fredonia, New York will host a symposium to celebrate contemporary Native American voices in the literary genres of Poetry, Fiction, and Drama with panels, presentations, and readings. The symposium will begin Friday, November 2, at 3:00 p.m. at the Williams Center and conclude at 4:00 on Saturday, November 3. Presenters include poets Simon Ortiz (Acoma Pueblo), Laura Tohe (Navajo), and Mark Turcotte (Ojibway): playwrite Bruce King (Oneida); and fiction writers Eric Gansworth (Onondaga) and James Stevens (Mohawk.)Native writers choose many forms of expression, which will be explored with respect to the challenges, successes, and experiences of the past. The emergence of Native American Literature in college curricula and within Native American Studies programs indicates a level of acceptance, recognition, and skill which we will honor.
The symposium is open to the public, with a special invitation to Native people, communities, and students in high school or college to join in the discussion and dialogue, and to hear works of contemporary writers.
