Please join special guest Rosalie Little Thunder and filmmaker Matthew Testa for the New York premiere of THE BUFFALO WAR (1 hour, 2001), preceded by the short COLUMBIA RIVER REDUX (4 min). This will be the closing night of the festival, and a reception follows.

Winner of 7 documentary awards, including Best Environmental Film at the 2001 San Francisco International Film Festival and the Jury Prize at the 2001 Newport Film Festival, THE BUFFALO WAR is a moving portrait of the Native Americans, ranchers, environmentalists and government officials struggling over the yearly killing of America's last wild bison.

Each winter, bison that migrate out of Yellowstone National Park in search of forage are confronted by Montana livestock agents who fear the animals will transmit disease to cattle. More than 3,000 Yellowsone bison, considered to be the last free-roaming buffalo in the United States, have been killed as part of a management policy that has incited protest from Native groups, conservationists and the public.

The film follows a 500-mile protest march across Montana by Native Americans, the travails of a ranching family caught up in the conflict, and the daring civil disobedience tactics of an environmental group, revealing complex tensions in the American West at the start of a new century.
