Cory Witherill, from Santa Monica, California, who was to defend his title at the All-Canada Motocross Valvoline de Montreal on Saturday September 15, announced this morning that he has cancelled his appearance in the race. While Witherill was looking forward to defending his title, the tragic events in the United States have forced his cancellation at the event.

"I love the race in Montreal, and I have been looking forward to it", said Witherill, who was scheduled to return home from Baltimore on Tuesday morning when the attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon occurred. "But I had very mixed feelings about racing this weekend. It was a difficult decision, but I know it was the right one."

Witherill is still in Baltimore and doesn't know when he'll be able to return to the West Coast. He turned back the transport driver, who left California on Monday with his off road racecar, yesterday.

Witherill has held the title to the All-Canada Motocross Valvoline de Montreal a record four times. He is currently racing in the open-wheel Dayton Indy Lights Championship Series. This year, Witherill made racing by becoming the first full-blooded Native American to race in the Indianapolis 500, where he finished 19th in the 33-car field.

"I'll be looking forward to coming to Montreal again next year", said Witherill. "This race is very competitive and a lot of fun, and Montreal is a great city to race in."
