A group of faculty, staff, and students at the University of North Dakota have organized the Northern Plains Conference on American Indian Team Names and Logos. The conference was organized in order to examine the complex issues involved when sports teams appropriate Native American names and images. The conference is scheduled for October 3, 4, and 5, 2001.Featured speakers will include Winona LaDuke (American Indian activist and author), Vernon Bellecourt (president of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and Media), and Charlene Teters (professor and dean at the Institute of American Indian Art). Panels on Thursday and Friday will bring scholars, authors, activists, and concerned citizens together to discuss the psychological, spiritual, legal, and ethical implications of the dominant culture1s use of minority groups as team symbols.
