"Kitsumkalum First Nation received $143,000, to support its Tempo Gas Bar Economic Development Initiative."

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA (July 13, 2001) - On behalf of the Government of Canada, Stephen Owen, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Quadra, today announced an investment of $143,000 to the Kitsumkalum First Nation for the renovation and expansion of the Kitsumkalum Tempo Gas Bar. Located outside the city of Terrace, this successful endeavour is owned entirely by the First Nation and has been in operation since 1998.

Today, the Kitsumkalum First Nation celebrates the completion of a 2,400 square foot convenience store, built in traditional long house style, and the expansion of the gas bar facilities. The convenience store and gas bar complement the existing R.V. park and boat launch.

"Initiatives such as this not only create jobs and support self-reliant First Nation communities, but they also clear the way for further development by establishing a more stable economic climate," said Owen. "All Aboriginal economic development projects, whether major initiatives or local small businesses, will help advance British Columbia's economy overall."

In addition to creating income for the Kitsumkalum First Nation, the Tempo Gas Bar provides employment and training for community members. Employees will receive ongoing training in fire protection, fuel handling and food service. The expansion of the convenience store will create six full time and one part time job.

"The Government of Canada is working in partnership with Aboriginal people in this province to improve their quality of life," said Robert Nault, Minister Indian and Northern Affairs Canada. "Initiatives such as this will assist First Nations in becoming full partners in British Columbia's economic success."

This economic development project is part of the Government of Canada's commitment to help strengthen Aboriginal business expertise and support strong, self-sufficient Aboriginal communities.
