The elimination of the Savage mascot and associated imagery is of vital importance to Southeastern Oklahoma State University, because not only is it an insult to Native Americans, but it is a violation of various Civil Rights laws. In fact, the United States Civil Rights Commission has called for an end of the use of Native American themed mascots. The fact that the mascot is derogatory towards Native Americans is clear, and the "Savage" is perhaps one of the most offensive mascots used in the nation; according to Miriam Webster Dictionary the term as an a noun means:

1: a person belonging to a primitive society
2: a brutal person
3 : a rude or unmannerly person

as a noun, the word describes the following:

1a: not domesticated or under human control : UNTAMED ; b: lacking the restraints normal to civilized human beings : FIERCE, FEROCIOUS 2: WILD, UNCULTIVATED
3a: BOORISH, RUDE ; b: MALICIOUS
4: lacking complex or advanced culture: UNCIVILIZED

Dictionary definitions are difficult to argue with, and the fact that the mascot has been Southeastern's since the 1930's shows how outdated it is. The use of the word to describe Native Americans implies cultural supremacy, and the dehumanizing, cartoon-like way Native American symbols are portrayed contributes to low self esteem in Native Americans. Simply put:, it is time for change. The use of the term "Savage"" in describing an entire race of people is incredibly insensitive and an example of institutionalized racism.

Southeastern is in violation of its own policies, since the Southeastern Bulletin states that "this institution...does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, handicap, or status as a veteran in any of its policies, practices or procedures." (8)

"And whereas, the academic policies and procedures manual states 'it is the policy of the board of regents and Southeastern Oklahoma State University that racial and ethnic harassment shall be prohibited and subject to disciplinary action as set forth in this policy.' Racial and ethnic harassment is defined as behavior or conduct addressed to individual(s) related to the victim's race, religion, ethnicity, or national origin that threatens violence or property damage or that incites or is likely to incite eminent lawless action." (7-6)

The racism involved in the use of the mascot is clear, and the insult of the term is felt by numerous students, and others. It is important that the mascot , and thus the institutionalized racism, be done away with completely, and replaced with respect and honor.

Calling Native Americans "Savages" is no honor.
