OPEN LETTER TO THE PUBLIC
November 14, 2000

The Christian Peacemaker Team in Chiapas, which has had a continuous presence in Chenalho County since June 1998, is concerned by the newly heightened tensions in this area in the last several days. We highly affirm as correct and worthy the Mexican government's public goal of disarming paramilitaries in this region, and recognize that the process of disarmament will take long and careful work.

At the same time, we know, from being present in the situation, that tensions, threats, and rumors are increasing and that the paramilitary groups in this region are on alert. Paramilitary radio activity has been high in recent days, in addition to frequent meetings taking place in communities in this area that have been known to be paramilitary strongholds.

In particular, new threats have emerged against La Sociedad Civil de Las Abejas, with particular reference to their displacement camps in X'oyep and in the newly established camp in the area of Yibeljoj.

In the face of this situation, members of our group, Christian Peacemaker Teams, will be present in these two camps beginning November 13 and during the following days. As pacifists, we refuse the use of weapons for the resolution of conflicts. As Christians, we put our faith in the Spirit of God, which is present in everyone in this situation, and which can cause new and unexpected things to flow forth.

We continue to hope and pray for the well being of all those involved in this complicated situation: soldiers, paramilitary civilians, and the thousands of internally displaced.

With hopes for a peace with dignity and justice for all,

Christian Peacemaker Teams, Chiapas

[CPT Note: CPT Chiapas sent this to authorities and the press yesterday before taking up temporary presence in the two refugee areas where the Bees under threat.]
