MOUNT PLEASANT, MI - A Native American who became a scapegoat for the deaths of two Federal Bureau of Investigation agents will be the subject of an Oct. 10 rally at Central Michigan University.Community leaders and others will rally in support of Leonard Peltier, who was convicted in the deaths of the agents, at 2 p.m. in front of Warriner Hall, adjacent to Franklin Street. Admission is free.
Scheduled speakers include author Harvey Arden, who edited Peltiers book, Prison Writings+ADs- Kim Miller, Mid MI Leonard Peltier Support Group Coordinator, a Representative from the Green Party, the Mayor of Mt. Pleasant, several community leaders, and Gary Sprague of the Michigan chapter of the American Indian Movement.
Others also may speak during the rally, which will feature entertainment by a Native American drum.
The rally is part of a nationwide movement to urge President Clinton to grant Peltier clemency, said Lisa Tiger, director of CMUs Native American Programs Office.
CMU's Native American Programs office is sponsoring the program with three student groups - Student Green Activists, Campus Progressive and the North American Indian Student Organization.
