ILLINOIS - On August 1, 2000, the Winnebago Nation of Nebraska, with David Lee Smith representing them, received the deed to 5.9 acres of beautiful and secluded land in the Peoria Illinois area. The land will be used for reburial purposes only.It is the wish of the Winnebago Nation of Nebraska, that this land not only be available to their people but, through them, to other tribes as well.
Tuesday, August 1, 2000 is a historic day! Since the 1830's our Native People have not had a reservation to bury our people in a natural and undisturbed way in the state of Illinois.
Midwest SOARRING'S role as facilitator opened up many possibilities which helped to make this day achievable. Reburial land has been Midwest SOARRING'S primary goal and the Creator has allowed this day to be a reality.
It is our sincere hope that soon the Ancestors may again rest in peace and be embraced within Mother Earth. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation for all those who have supported us.
