When the Journey of the Sacred Hoop enters our Nation's Capitol on July 9, the core group of 25 walkers will have covered 3800 miles over a 109 day period. They undertook this pilgrimage to bring a message of hope to both Native American communities and the many other cities, towns and communities which received their caravan and attended their conferences along a southern route across the United States. They carry a message of hope that our Nation can heal from chemical addictions, drug and alcohol abuse, and family violence. Twelve conferences and informal presentations in cities and towns along the way presented teachings, learning experiences and addiction prevention models which can be carried forward into plans of action for the healing of individuals, families and communities from both addictions and violence. The Walk is called the Journey of the Sacred Hoop because the White Bison 100 Eagle Feather Hoop is being carried by participants throughout the way from Los Angeles, California to Washington, DC. The Journey left LA on April 2 and will arrive in the Washington area on July 8.
Honoring ceremonies will be held at the Iwo Jima Memorial from 7:00 PM until sunset on July 9, and at the Vietnam, Korean, and Vietnam Nurses Memorials, as well as the Tree of Peace early in the morning of July 10.
On Monday, July 10 from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM there will be an event entitled Strengthening Our Families at the Department of the Interior South Annex just off Constitution Avenue across the street from the Vietnam Memorial. Speakers will include: Janet Reno, Attorney General, (invited); Ruth Sanchez-Way, Ph.D., Acting Director Center for Substance Abuse Prevention; Susan Masten, President National Congress of American Indians; Danny Glover, actor; Kevin Gover, Assistant Secretary Indian Affairs, Department of the Interior; and other Native Americans and government officials involved in substance abuse and violence prevention in American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
