"Strength Through Collective Wisdom"

The Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs Hosts the Governors' Interstate Indian Council's 51st Annual Conference, "Strength Through Collective Wisdom," August 26-30, 2000.

        The Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs is pleased to host the Governors' Interstate Indian Council's 51st Annual Conference, "Strength Through Collective Wisdom," August 26-30. Participants will receive information on the most current and pressing issues in Indian Country from top officials in the United States Government as well as national and state American Indian organizations. Keynote speakers include: Kevin Gover, Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Indian Affairs; Paul Moorehead, Senate Majority Staff Director for the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs; Susan Masten, President, National Congress of American Indians; Dr. Gloria Sly, President, National Indian Education Association; Mike Hahetsky, Director of Legislative Affairs Office of the Director, Indian Health Services; Yvette Joseph Fox, Executive Director, National Indian Health Board.

        Barbara Warner, President, Governors' Interstate Indian Council, and Executive Director, Oklahoma Indian Affairs Commission, will facilitate a special Tribal Leaders Session. This session offers Tribal Leaders a forum to address Kevin Gover, Assistant Secretary, and other federal representatives regarding Tribal concerns. Other conference topics and Plenary Sessions include, but are not limited to, education, federal legislation, Indian Children's issues, water rights, Native American Graves and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), State-Tribal Relations, and Native Athletics.

        The conference will be hosted in the historic city of Durango, Colorado at the beautiful Sheraton Tamarron, 40292 Highway 550 N. Durango is located in the Animas River Valley of the San Juan Mountains intersection near the Four Corners National Monument. For reservations call 1-800-678-1000 (conference reservation rates guaranteed through Aug. 4, 2000) and accommodations include two queen beds, full kitchen and living areas.
