WISCONSIN - CPTer Matt Schaaf will go on trial for trespassing at the ELF facility in northern Wisconsin on April 4 at the Ashland County Circuit Court. On January 23, Schaaf, six other CPTers, assorted student groups and activists from the area, were cited for trespassing as thy gathered to spread ashes, pray, and sing at the U.S. Navy's Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) transmitter site, located on U.S. Forest Service land in northern Wisconsin. The U.S. Navy built the ELF transmitter to send signals to Trident submarines when they are deeply submerged in ocean waters, within striking distance of other nations. Each Trident is capable of carrying up to 120 nuclear warheads, every one of which is 5 to 25 times more powerful than the atomic bomb that obliterated Hiroshima.
In July 1996 the International Court of Justice ruled that first strike nuclear facilities, such as the ELF/Trident system, are illegal under international law.
Schaaf, along with Scott Mathern-Jacobson of Duluth, Minnesota, Scott Griffiths of Cornucopia, Wisconsin and Lincoln Rice of Milwaukee, Wisconsin decided to challenge in court the citations they received for trespassing in January. The four face a maximum of 6 months in jail and a $1,000.00 fine.
