A commemorative stamp in honor of the first AmericanIndian registered nurse is in the works thanks to the Franklin County Public Hospital Nurse's Alumnae Association. If the proposal is accepted, Susie Walking Bear Yellowtail '22 will be depicted on the stamp.
Yellowtail, a Crow from Montana, graduated from Franklin County Public Hospital School of Nursing, located in Greenfield...in 1927 and shortly thereafter returned to the Crow reservation. She worked first for the Indian Health Service and later for the U.S. Public health Service. She assessed the health, social, and education problems of reservation Indians and became the group's national spokesperson, In 1978 the American Indian Nurses Association designated her the "Grandmother of American Indian Nurses."
