Pine Ridge - Administrative Leave has been granted for all Tribal employees up to and including the twenty-first of January. The action was necessitated by large sums of money being looted from funds channeled through the Tribe that are supposed to be used to help the Oyate, according to Chief Oliver Red Cloud. The Council is split and everyone is taking sides in the fight between the Tribal President and the Treasurer. The Department of Justice has been called to assist the people of the Tribe.
KILI radio reported that the American Indian Movement is enroute to Pine Ridge to assist in the occupation.
The Oglala Lakota Nation recently recieved a grant from the Department of Justice in the amount of 7.8 million to fund a multi-disciplinary approach to addressing social problems suffered by the people of the Tribe. The Department of Public Safety was anticipating 5.4 million from this project called, "The Circle Project", but because of Tribal Government interference the project has been suspended.
As a result, sixty letters of termination were issued last Friday to law enforcement personnel. The terminations were said to be a result of a lack of funding to support those positions.
