The National Coalition on Racism in Sports and Media (NCRSM) responded to University of Illinois Board of Trustees, January, 13th 2000, resolution on the "Chief Illiniwek" mascot issue. The NCRSM, a human rights organization directed by prominent Native American leaders, has offered assistance to the University of Illinois administration in fulfilling the mandate from the University of Illinois Board of Trustees: to devise and maintain appropriate strategies for the continued discussion of the "Chief Illiniwek" issue, and for the establishment of processes to address the "Chief's" negative impact.
This organization is already engaged on dialogue about Indian mascots with Major League Baseball officials, team owners and investors. "We are always willing to dialogue. Even small steps towards the elimination of racism are significant. We wish to be instrumental in this positive opening", explains Michael S. Haney, National Executive Director.
