Congressman Tom Udall will participate in a Community Meeting in the lobby of the Crownpoint Health Care Facility at 12 pm (Noon), Friday, January 14, 2000. The purpose of the Crownpoint Community Meeting is to discuss citizens' concerns about HRI's uranium mining operations proposed for the Navajo communities of Crownpoint and Church Rock, New Mexico.Crownpoint Health Care Facility representatives will also explain why they believe HRI's operations may pose a potential health threat to local Navajo residents.
Congressman Udall's visit was arranged by Eastern Navajo Din Against Uranium Mining (ENDAUM) in order to educate the community about potential adverse environmental and health effects from the proposed mining operations and to allow community members to share their ideas and concerns with Representative Udall. ENDAUM has spent several months working with Congressman Udall and his staff to address the dangers posed by HRI's proposed mining operations and to begin discussion about the need for an alternative vision of safe and healthy economic development for Navajo communities.
On November 17, 1999, Representative Udall and thirty-two other members of Congress wrote President Clinton informing him of the environmental threats caused by the uranium mining project.
ENDAUM is a Navajo grassroots organization working to protect Church Rock and Crownpoint's drinking water and environment from contamination threatened by HRI's uranium mining project.
