Tahlequah, OK - The Cherokee Nation will host a two-day workshop in November designed to
educate school personnel about working with students that live in
poverty. The workshop will take place at the Heart O’ Hills Camp and
Conference Center near Welling on Nov. 12 -13, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30
p.m. daily.
Based on the book, “Bridges Out of Poverty,” by Ruby K. Payne, Philip Devol and Terie Druessi Smith, the workshop is designed to introduce school officials to issues and behaviors of students and their families that face the challenges of poverty. The first day will cover topics that will help school personnel recognize and understand poverty, and the second day will provide educators with ways to address students’ challenges before they become overwhelming. Workshop strategies can be readily implemented and integrated into any school curriculum or program. The workshop is sponsored by the Cherokee Nation Community Services Group. There is no cost to attend, and all materials will be provided. Refreshments, including a continental breakfast and lunch, will also be provided both days. Seating is limited to the first 80 participants to register by Nov. 2, 2009. For registration, please call 918-453-5259 or send e-mail to: wilma-fixin@cherokee.org. For additional questions about the workshop, contact Nancy Scott, phone: 918-453-5299. |
