TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma — The Cherokee Nation Education Corporation
(CNEC) has announced its scholarship winners for the 2009-10
academic school year. CNEC awarded the scholarships to 17 high
school students and six university students. Awards are based
on special criteria that includes academic achievement (grade
point average, ACT/SAT score), financial need, participation
in cultural and community activities, academic area of study,
and future plans to serve Cherokee people.
The 2009-10 CNEC scholarship awardees are: *CNEC Mission Award: Swanita Armstrong, Stilwell, Jade Hansen, Kansas, Jason Lowe, Warner, Ashley Thirsty, Tahlequah, and Bambi Vogele, Pawnee. CNEC is a non-profit corporation chartered by the Cherokee Nation that promotes educational opportunities for tribal citizens and revitalization of the language, culture and history of Cherokee people. Its board, appointed by the Principal Chief and confirmed by the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council is composed of individuals who represent the mission of the organization.
