“He’s been to a lot of our games and we know that a lot of people recognize him and would want to meet him,” said Lindsey Hammer, president of the junior class. “He’s really funny and he’s a nice guy.” Diaz joined the Newschannel 8 team in 1999 and has served in various positions at the station such as the 8 On Your Side producer, special projects producer, and weekend sports anchor. Diaz can currently be seen in the evenings, either reporting on local sports or anchoring one of the newscasts. He also serves as a co-host of the show, “You Make the Call," on Sunday nights. Tickets for a chance to win a “Date with Diaz” are $1 each and can be purchased from any member of the Sequoyah Schools’ junior class, or from class sponsor Brandi Adair. Proceeds will go to fund the Sequoyah Schools’ junior-senior prom. Tickets will also be sold during the Sequoyah Schools’ home basketball game on February 13, with the winner announced at that game. For more information or to purchase a ticket, contact Adair by e-mail: brandi-adair@cherokee.org. Sequoyah Schools, a boarding school for Native American students, originated in 1871 as an orphan asylum to care for children who were orphaned by the Civil War. Now known as Sequoyah Schools, it is named for Sequoyah, the scholar who developed the Cherokee syllabary. The school is regionally and state accredited for grades 7-12 and has become the school of choice for more than 400 Native American students every year. Sequoyah Schools is located five miles southwest of Tahlequah, Oklahoma For more information call 918-453-5400 or visit the Sequoyah Schools’ web site. |
