TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma - The first weekend in May has long been a time of gathering and getting together for Sequoyah Schools’ graduates. Sequoyah alumni from all over the country come back to Tahlequah to reminisce about the days when they were football players, cheerleaders and dorm students. This year, the Sequoyah Schools’ residential students have planned an event for the alumni to help make their weekend even more enjoyable. The students will hold an art show and sale.

“We have a lot of artistically talented students,” said David Stand, show coordinator. “This gives them a chance to show off their work while meeting and greeting former students. It will be nice to have Sequoyah students from different generations get together and talk about their art.”

The student art show and sale will be held on Saturday, May 2 from 3:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. in the Creek Hall on the Sequoyah Schools’ campus, immediately preceding the annual alumni banquet in the cafeteria.

“Students will present a variety of arts, crafts and beadworks,” Stand said. “Exhibits will be both traditional and non-traditional.”

Student art work will be available to purchase. For more information on the student art show and sale, contact Stand, phone: 918-453-5196 or Mary Chanate, phone: 918-207-3942. For more information on the Sequoyah Schools’ alumni banquet, contact Charles Cochran by email: cdcochran@hotmail.com.

Sequoyah Schools, a boarding school for Native American students, originated in 1871 as an orphan asylum to care for children who were orphaned by the Civil War. Now known as Sequoyah Schools, it is named for Sequoyah, the scholar who developed the Cherokee syllabary. The school is regionally and state accredited for grades 7-12 and has become the school of choice for more than 400 Native American students every year. Sequoyah Schools is located five miles southwest of Tahlequah, Oklahoma. For more information call 918-453-5400 or visit the Sequoyah Schools’ web site.
