"Cherokee National Holiday Art Show's Best in Show winner, "Ascension-Another Journey" by Bill Glass, Jr."
TAHLEQUAH, OK - In honor of Native American art and culture, the Cherokee Nation recently held an Art Show in conjunction with the 56th Annual Cherokee National Holiday.

“The show was a huge success,” said Cora Lathrop, event coordinator. “The artwork was spectacular and talent of the artists who participated is incredible.”

In the Traditional Basketry division, Shawna Cain placed first and second for her works “Kanati” and “Tsoli.” Sandra Pallie was awarded third for “Blue Berry Patch.”

Bessie Russell received first place in the Contemporary Basketry division for her work “Legacy Lives.” Second place was awarded to “Cherokee Ancestors” by Charlotte Coats. Sandra Pallie placed third for the work “Let’s Go Around in Circles” and Renee Hoover received an Honorable Mention for her work “Simplicity.”

In the Diverse Arts and Fine Art Furnishings category, Howard Todome received the first place award for his work “Buffalo Clan.” Second place was presented to Jacque C. Young for “Towards the Sun.” Roger Cain placed third for his work “Uktena” and Billy McLemore received an Honorable Mention for “Ulisi.”

Vernon Courtwright was awarded first place in the Drawings, Graphics and Photography division for “Stardust Intertribal.” Second place was presented to Roy Boney, Jr. for “Cherokee Heavy Metal.” Ryan Lee Smith received third place for “Dusk Bear” and Mary Beth Nelson Received an Honorable Mention for “SE Collagell”

In the Jewelry category, Charley Johnson placed first for “Southeastern Dancer II.” Second place was awarded to Teri-Lee Rhodes for “7 Clans.” Third place went to Demos Glass for “Splined Vessel” and the Honorable Mention was awarded to Charley Johnson for “Hand & Eye Gorget.”

Sharon Irla was presented first place for “Crows Stirring the Magic” in the Paintings category. Second place was presented to Clif Doyeto for “Old Ways Are Done.” Joan Hill placed third for “Ceremony of the Medicine Maker” and Dana Tiger received an Honorable Mention for “Ready to Dance.”

In the Traditional Pottery category, Crystal Hanna was awarded first place for “Guardians of the Underworld.” Second place was presented to Lisa Rutherford for “Gi-Ga-Ge” and third place was awarded to Joanne Richmond for “Blowing in the Wind.” Richmond also received an Honorable Mention for “The Overseer.”

Caroline Glenn received first place in the Contemporary Pottery division for “Squash Pot #5.” Glenn was also awarded second place for “Water Lily.” Third place went to Christie Duschel for “Blue Woodpecker” and Stephen Wood received an Honorable Mention for “Buffalo Pot.”

In the Sculpture category, first place was awarded to Ron Mitchell for “When Mother Cried.” Second place was awarded to Gary Allen for “Bird Man.” Richard Alfred received third place for “Lord of the Woods” and an Honorable Mention was awarded to Christie Duschel for “Winged Snake.”

Veronica Gaston placed first in the Textiles and Weaving division for “Ancient Symbols.” Second place was presented to Shawna Cain for “Asduisdi” and third place was awarded to Tonia Hogner-Weavel for “Everything Old is New Again.” Cathy Moomaw received in Honorable Mention in the division for “Traditional Cherokee Wedding Set.”

In the youth division, Lisan Tiger Blair placed first for “Might Stickball Player.” Melissa Dew was awarded second place for “Tsa-La-Gi.” Third place was presented to Cara L. Martin for “A Day in the Meadow” and Yazzie L. Lewis received an Honorable Mention for “Indian Battles Uktena.”

In addition, special awards were presented by each of the judges. Judge, Christina Burke, recognized the work “Keetowah” by Sandra Pallie. Verna Bates was chosen by judge, Sherman Chaddlesone, for “Let’s Boogie” and judge, Anna Sixkiller Mitchell chose a work titled “Dancing Twins” by Roger Cain.

The Chief’s Choice was presented to Sharon Irla in the adult division for “Warriors Call.” In the youth division, the award was given to Christie Blair Tiger for “Cherokee Rose.”

The Speaker of the Council award was presented to Sharon Irla in the adult division for “Crows Stirring the Magic.” Lisan Blair Tiger received the award in the youth division for “Mighty Stickball Player.”

Best in Show was awarded to Bill Glass, Jr. for “Ascension-Another Journey.”

“I want to thank all of the artists who took part in the competition and everyone who came out and supported them. I hope to see everyone back for next year’s show,” said Lathrop.”
