TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma - The Sequoyah girls’ fast-pitch softball team has
earned a trip to the OSSAA state softball tournament by going undefeated
in regional play-off action. The Sequoyah team defeated Wilburton and
Panama for a chance to compete for the class 3A state title.
“This is something that I’ve looked forward to since I was little,” said
Haylee Beck, a sophomore and catcher for the Sequoyah team.
Beck joined the Sequoyah team as a freshman, but already had many years
of softball experience under her belt, playing the sport since she was
three years old.
“All my life I’ve wanted to be a state champion and now I have a
chance,” Beck said. “We’re not the kind of team to slack off; we know
what we have to do and know how to get it done.”
The Sequoyah girls’ fast-pitch softball team is led by Coach Jeff Turtle
and Assistant Coach Jacob Tanner. This is the fourth year for Sequoyah
to compete in fast-pitch softball.
“He (Turtle) tells us to keep playing hard and to have fun with it, but
he lets us know when we make mistakes and helps us fix them,” said
Lynsey Dry, a sophomore and all-around player on the team. “He’s really
prepared us for this.”
Sequoyah will play this Thursday, October 9, at 5 p.m. at ASA Hall of
Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City against Verdigris. Admission will be $5
for students and adults.
