OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - The Native Language Summit will be held Tuesday, March 18, at the Oklahoma City University School of Law. Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith will be the keynote speaker.

The event is being sponsored by the Intertribal Language Revitalization Committee, a group that is comprised of language preservation staff from the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Muscogee (Creek), Seminole and Cherokee Nations. The summit will focus on the importance of strengthening language programs within Oklahoma to retain native languages and utilizing those languages. A variety of guest speakers and workshops will be featured for participants.

During the summit, a language documentary produced by Cherokee Nation will be aired that showcases the Nation’s efforts to revitalize its native tongue. The video’s main objective is to help the public understand the importance for all tribes to preserve their traditional spoken languages.
