TAHLEQUAH, OK - Sequoyah Schools’ seniors Isacc Schultz and Angel Goodrich were recently named Students of the Month for February by the Cherokee County Rotary Club.

“This is quite an honor for our students to be recognized by the community,” said Gina Stanley, Sequoyah superintendent. “We are so glad that the Rotary Club has taken the time to recognize all of their hard work.”

The Rotary Club treated the students to lunch and presented them with medallions and certificates of scholastic achievement. Other Sequoyah students that have been recognized by the Rotary Club in the past are Cody Poe, Lorin Hammer, Lawrence Scraper, Kolton Homes, Miranda Witte, Chris Little, Mariah Norwood, Dion Francis, Alisa Riddle and Raelee Conrad. All Rotary Club Students of the Month are eligible to compete for a $500 scholarship. Last year’s scholarship recipient was Sequoyah Schools’ alumnus Diana Onco.

“This is just another way to honor our students for all the hard work they put forth over the past four years,” said Debra Nelson, Sequoyah Schools’ senior counselor.

Schultz, 18, of Claremore is the son of Kurt and Lori Schultz. He is a member of the boys’ basketball team and is concurrently enrolled at Indian Capital Technology Center.

Goodrich, 18, of Stilwell, is the daughter of Jonathan and Fayth Lewis and is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. She plays basketball and softball and has signed a letter of intent and has received a scholarship to play basketball at the University of Kansas.

Sequoyah Schools, a boarding school for Native American students located near Tahlequah, Okla., originated in 1871 as an orphan asylum to care for children who were orphaned by the Civil War. Now operated by the Cherokee Nation and known as Sequoyah Schools, it is named for Sequoyah, the scholar who developed the Cherokee syllabary. It is regionally and state accredited for grades 7-12 and has become the school of choice for more than 400 high school students every year.
