TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma - Sequoyah Schools’ senior Rebecca Steed
has been named a member of the National Society of High School
Scholars for her hard work and dedication to excellence.
“It’s truly a blessing to be honored for all of my hard work,” Steed
said.
Membership to the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) is by
invitation only and is limited to only a select few high school students
every year. Once accepted, students are eligible to compete for NSHSS
scholarships totaling more than $12,000 annually.
Steed has also received the President’s Leadership Class scholarship
from Northeastern State University and plans to attend NSU in fall and
major in nursing.
“My mom has inspired me,” Steed said. “She is a nurse and I grew up
around the health field and I enjoy taking care of people.”
Steed, 17, of Tahlequah, is the daughter of Jan White and James Steed.
She is Cherokee, Navajo and Osage and is a member of American Indian
Science and Engineering Society, National Honor Society and the varsity
cheerleading squad. She has been named a Muskogee Phoenix Academic
All-Star, and is on the Superintendent’s Honor Roll.
Sequoyah Schools, a boarding school for Native American students located
near Tahlequah, Okla., originated in 1871 as an orphan asylum to care
for children who were orphaned by the Civil War. Now operated by the
Cherokee Nation and known as Sequoyah Schools, it is named for Sequoyah,
the scholar who developed the Cherokee syllabary. It is regionally and
state accredited for grades 7-12 and has become the school of choice for
