PARK HILL, Oklahoma – The Cherokee Heritage Center is offering a two-day
class in traditional “tear dress” styled Cherokee clothing on Friday,
Feb. 8, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 9, from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m. Instructor, Tonia Weavel, has over 20 years experience in dress
making and is the costumer/dress maker for the Cherokee National Youth
Choir and has dressed several of the past Miss Cherokees.
This class is designed to teach the history and basis techniques of tear dress making. The instructions will include dress measurements and construction techniques. The Cherokee tear dress is the official tribal dress for women of the Cherokee Nation by proclamation of the Tribal Council. Additional classes planned for spring 2008 include Cherokee basketry, flute making and Ancient Southeastern pottery. Contact the Cherokee Heritage Center for the complete schedule. Registration is required for the tear dear class, as class size is limited. The $65 fee includes tuition, fabric and notions.
