PARK HILL, Oklahoma – The Cherokee Heritage Center will host its annual
Indian Territory Days event on March 27 and 28. The program, which is
designed for school-aged children, will provide a venue for a field trip
that is both educational and entertaining. Kindergarten through
12th-grade students can experience Cherokee culture, including a
particular focus on the late 1800’s prior to Oklahoma statehood.
Participants in the Indian Territory Days event will visit Adams Corner Rural Village, a 19th century Cherokee town created from relocated and reconstructed historic structures that were typical in rural towns in the Cherokee Nation at that time. Trained interpreters located at nine cultural stations will provide interactive experiences to help illustrate both continuity and change in Cherokee culture. The planned cultural stations include storytelling and oral traditions, basketry, blowgun shooting, a traditional Cherokee game called "chunkey," Cherokee marbles, a Cherokee language lesson at the schoolhouse, and a “touch and feel” table. After visiting these stations students will tour the Trail of Tears exhibition inside the museum. The admission price of $5 per student includes the event and all attractions. The Indian Territory Days programming will take place continuously from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily at the Cherokee Heritage Center, with the same activities offered on both days. One adult will be admitted free with every 10 children. For more information, call Tonia Weavel, phone: 918-456-6007 (ext.241), or send an e-mail to education@CherokeeHeritage.org. Registration for school groups is encouraged. |
