TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council unanimously
confirmed Principal Chief Chad Smith’s appointments of Secretary of
State and Treasurer during the September general meeting held Monday
night in Tahlequah.
Melanie Knight, originally from Stilwell, was once again confirmed as
the Secretary of State and Callie Catcher, of Broken Arrow, was again
confirmed as the Treasurer of the Cherokee Nation.
With more than a decade of experience in legislative issues for tribal
governments, Knight has extensive experience with self-governance,
constitutional amendments, contracts and financial management systems.
In addition to the Cherokee Nation, she has worked as a grant director
with the Kaw Nation of Oklahoma and as a grant reviewer for the
Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C.
“I am very honored to have the opportunity to continue my position of
Secretary of State and serve the Cherokee people,” Knight said.
Catcher served as CEO of Cherokee Nation Businesses, Inc. and has more
than 25 years experience in the field, including having held top
financial positions with the Cherokee Nation, Dover Resources, Coburn
Optical Industries and Thermofil.
“We have made great progress in our financial accountability to our
citizens,” Catcher said. “I, too, am honored to continue serving the
tribe and its people.”
