TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – Students can now sign up for some interesting
and fun summer classes ranging from history to cooking to photography as
part of the Sequoyah Schools Summer Learning Program. Classes will be
held June 18 – 29, from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. for any student in the
fifth- through 12th-grades. There is no charge for participation.
“We’ve added a summer learning program to keep the focus on academics during the summer,” said Gina Stanley, Sequoyah Schools superintendent. “We are providing an option for students in the area to keep their minds focused and maybe give them a head start on the next school year.” The summer classes offered are Cherokee culture, leadership, reading, digital photography, healthy living, centennial history, Cherokee cooking and computer applications. Students will be able to choose two of these classes to participate in during the two-week class period. Sequoyah Schools cafeteria will provide lunch. Enrollment is open to students in the fifth-grade and up, but class size is limited so students are encouraged to enroll early. The absolute deadline for enrollment is June 8. For more information on the Sequoyah Schools Summer Learning Program or to request an application, call Tera Shows, phone: 918-453-5542 or send e-mail to: tshows@cherokee.org. Sequoyah Schools, a boarding school for Native American students located near Tahlequah, Oklahoma, originated in 1871 to take care of the many Cherokee children orphaned during the Civil War. In the years that followed, it served as the Sequoyah Orphan Training School and the Sequoyah Vocational School. Now known as Sequoyah Schools, it is named for Sequoyah, the scholar who developed the Cherokee syllabary. In November 1985, the Cherokee Nation resumed the operation of Sequoyah Schools. It is regionally and state accredited for grades 7-12 and has become the school of choice for more than 300 high school students every year.
