TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – In a continued effort to partner with community organizations, the Cherokee Nation recently contributed $15,000 to the Tahlequah Area Habit for Humanity.

“The Cherokee Nation is community-focused and community-driven,” said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. “The strength of the Cherokee Nation lies in our communities and it is important that we help support other organizations with the same vision and dedication to citizens of the Cherokee Nation and of Oklahoma.”

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that seeks to eliminate homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. The group invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need.

“We are very pleased to receive this contribution from the Cherokee Nation,” said George Fulk, president of the Tahlequah Area Habitat for Humanity. “We have decided to use the funds to help secure the future of our Habitat affiliate. With the ever increasing cost of land, we have purchased a lot at 429 Lee Street with this generous contribution. There is currently a burned out house on the property, which our volunteers will tear down. We will build one or two new houses in its place.”
