TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma – Boasting a lineup of some of Oklahoma’s top award-winning Cherokee artists, the Cherokee Artists Association, in combination with the Tahlequah Arts Guild, recently held its first Holiday Art Show & Sale at the organization’s Tahlequah headquarters.

Several notable artists who offered works for sale were Mary Adair, Gunter Anderson, Roger Cain, Mike Daniel, Mike Dart, Demos Glass, Lori Hastings, Dan Horsechief, Mary Horsechief, Robert Lewis, Abraham Locust, Bill Rabbit, Lisa Rutherford, Loretta Weaver, Shawna Rogers Cain, Bill Glass Jr., Crystal Hanna, Sharon Irla, and Jane Osti.

The event’s art categories included pottery, weavings, basketry, paintings, beadwork, booger masks, copper work, photography and the popular cornhusk Christmas tree ornaments.

“All make fabulous Christmas gifts that would be treasured for generations to come,” said CAA President Sharon Irla.

Nedra Harris, co-owner of Cabin Creek Winery in Big Cabin, Okla., and her grandson Scott Harris, hosted a wine tasting during this year’s CAA holiday show to support the organization and to promote her winery, which is located on her family’s original Cherokee allotment.

“My family and I are very proud of our Cherokee heritage and want to show it,” she said.

The CAA also recognized Dist. 1 Tribal Councilor Bill John Baker and former Dist. 3 Tribal Councilor Phyllis Yargee for their support of Cherokee art and artists with certificates of honor and clay pots created by Cherokee potter Mike Daniel.

“These two council members have been especially supportive in the mission of Cherokee Artists Association, which is to promote authentic Cherokee art and protect the interests of those who create it,” said Irla.

Along with protecting artist’s rights, Irla said the group holds artist demonstrations at its headquarters and actively seeks new members with various levels of membership. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month in Tahlequah.
