TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation will be offering a Cherokee language course online beginning Monday, January 7, through the tribe’s web site. The Cherokee Nation began offering language classes online in February, 2003. Since then, approximately 1,000 students register each session. Students from all over the world, including France, Australia, Spain, Mexico, Germany and Canada have taken part in the courses. Registration for the upcoming class will begin on Monday, December 17. The course will last 10 weeks and is free to the public. Classes offered include: Cherokee I, Cherokee II and Cherokee III. To make the classes more interactive and easier to access, the Cherokee Nation will utilize updated software, which will allow for more students to participate, easier login capabilities, full-screen options, archiving abilities and a new cross platform interface for PCs, as well as Mac users. Classes are live and anyone with Internet access can participate. The course works best with DSL or higher Internet capabilities.
