TULSA, OKLAHOMA - Partnering with an Oklahoma organization to assist Tulsa
area citizens affected by domestic violence, the Cherokee Nation
recently provided Domestic Violence Intervention Services Inc. (DVIS)
with $8,500 in funding to aid in shelter costs.
“The Cherokee Nation is proud to partner with organizations that work for the betterment of people and our communities,” said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. “DVIS provides a great service to individuals in crisis situations and we are glad we could partner together for this project.” DVIS is nonprofit organization that works to provide comprehensive intervention and prevention services to men, women and children affected by domestic violence. The mission of DVIS is to impact social change and stop violence in families and societies through prevention, intervention, and education. The organization offers support services to individuals affected by domestic violence and sexual assault by offering a 24-hour crisis line, residential services, legal services, outpatient counseling, abuser counseling, hospital advocacy and community education. According to Melissa Schnur, DVIS Community Relations Coordinator, the group relies heavily on community volunteers and contributions from local businesses and government organizations such as the Cherokee Nation. “Without the dedication and compassion of our volunteers and generous financial gifts from the community and surrounding areas, DVIS could not sustain its level of assistance to the many individuals living with sexual and domestic violence,” said Schnur. The funds provided by Cherokee Nation will be used to fund the emergency shelter for individuals and children who are fleeing violent homes. “The monetary gift from the Cherokee Nation will help DVIS to offer services to hundreds of individuals in need,” said Schnur. “We appreciate the tribe’s willingness to help promote a safe and violent free environment for persons affected by domestic violence and commend their desire to partner with Oklahoma organizations to make stronger and more stable communities within the state.” |
