TAHLEQUAH, OK - Attention basketball teams! Come out and compete in
Cherokee Nation’s 3-On-3 Tournament basketball tournament on Labor Day
weekend, which is sure to bring talent from all across the local area
and surrounding states.
It’s part of the action and fun at the 55th Annual Cherokee National Holiday. The tournament will be held on Friday, August 31 beginning at 5 p.m., and Saturday, September 1 beginning at 9 a.m., at the Markoma gym located on Fourth Street in Tahlequah. “This event is a lot of fun and is very competitive,” said Robin Stand, event coordinator. “Every year the tournament gets more popular and the competition is extremely tough. I encourage all players and fans to come out and watch.” The deadline for entry is Thursday, August 28. The entree fee for adult teams is $50.Youth team registration fee is $40. Teams are allowed to have a 5 man roster with one non-Indian player. All other team members must include a copy of their CDIB card with entry forms. Youth participants must bring in a report card or letter from school stating their grade level. The divisions are grades 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, high school 9-12 (boys & girls) and adult men’s and women’s. In the adult categories participants can play up in a division but not down. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place in each category. In addition to players and teams, the 3-On-3 Tournament is need of volunteers and referees. Interested parties should contact Robin Stand for further information. The Cherokee National Holiday has been held since 1953 in tribute of the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution. It has grown into one of the largest events in Oklahoma, attracting more than 90,000 visitors from across the world. This year’s theme is “Common Values, Common Ground,” in commemoration of the 169 years of rich history the Cherokee Nation has in what is now Oklahoma, and the 100th anniversary of Oklahoma’s statehood. “This theme is a tribute to the partnership that exists between the Cherokee Nation and the great state of Oklahoma.” said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. “Throughout the years we have worked together to create better and stronger communities all over the state. This year’s theme of ‘Common Values, Common Ground’ reiterates the importance of the continuation of this relationship for the betterment of Cherokee citizens and our Oklahoma neighbors.
