TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Nation recently hosted a
men and women’s fast pitch softball tournament in conjunction with
the 54th Annual Cherokee National Holiday.
In the women’s division first place went to the Cetto Harjo team from
Sapulpa, the second place award was presented to Sga Sdi Yu of
Tahlequah/Kenwood, third place went to the Throw Backs of Tulsa, and
fourth place went to Chahtas of Southeastern Oklahoma.
In the men’s division AO2 of Tahlequah took first place, Duck Creek of
south Tulsa placed second, third place was won by 4 Love of the Game of
Okmulgee/Henryetta, and the Wichita Indians of Sapulpa took fourth place.
According to event coordinator Denise Honawa, the event was a huge
success.
“This year the event pulled in some great teams from within the Cherokee
Nation and outside our area,” said Honawa. “The games were exciting and
competitive. The men’s finals went two games and were played by two very
talented teams. Everyone had a great time.”
The Cherokee National Holiday has been held since 1953 in honor of the
signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution. This year’s theme was “The
Cherokee Nation Continues in Full Force and Effect” in commemoration of
the Act of 1906, which provided that the tribal constitutional
governments of the Five Tribes should continue in “full force and
effect,” thus ensuring continuous tribal sovereignty.
