SALLISAW, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Nation Youth Development/Community
Services Department will be hosting a cultural day on Friday, October 27,
from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sequoyah’s Cabin in Sallisaw.
According to Principal Chief Chad Smith, keeping Cherokee culture alive is important to the future of the Cherokee Nation. “Teaching Cherokee youth the customs of our people is crucial in maintaining our cultural identity and our heritage,” said Smith. “It is important for young Cherokees to understand and appreciate the history and traditions of our ancestors.” The cultural day activities will include information and instruction on Cherokee marbles, beadwork, basket weaving, storytelling, corn husk dolls, stickball, clay work, drug awareness, and environmental protection.
