"Community members join in
on the building
project at Coo-Y-Ya, funded through the Cherokee Nation Community
Work Program."

TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Nation is once again offering
the Community Work Project to Cherokee organizations led by tribal
citizens. Currently, funds are available to assist communities with
projects such as community buildings, ballparks and walking trails.
Community based organizations that are administered by Cherokee Nation
citizens are invited to submit proposals for community projects to be
considered for funding.
“This isn’t federal money so there are no restrictions,” said Don
Greenfeather, Cherokee Nation Director of Community Development.
“We had several communities apply for funding last year and those
projects are currently underway and look to be very successful.”
Cherokee Nation’s community service program provides community-based
organizations with application forms and a timeline to submit proposals
for community projects. Proposals must include specific plans for how
the funds will benefit the community. All projects must demonstrate a
community purpose and Cherokee citizens must actively participate,
contribute and make decisions as a group.
“Our goal is to strengthen communities,” Greenfeather said. “We want
to continue to enhance the community spirit and get people working
together.”
All projects submitted will be considered, and those that include a
community self-help component will be given top priority in funding
initiatives.
